Hello folks and welcome to another addition of “Ask A Panelist!” This week we are looking for questions relating to the current playoff series, and thanks to our blog master Moo, we got a beauty of a question. Chris Asked;

“How does a team collapse like the Sharks did last night (after the 5-2 Stars victory)?”

So let us get something straight from the start. I do not personally believe that San Jose gave that game away. I believe they played a solid sixty minutes of hockey. Have I got you hooked yet? To get the answer to that question, I am going to break down a few players that should be veritable superstars in this series, and whether their efforts are equating to the names they have built for themselves. I am going to forcefully raise a few hands on the Sharks squad that need to step up (or at this point, NEEDED to step up), and we can really consider what caused Dallas to come back and dominate that game. Once I have done that, I can legitimately explain what is going on in this specific series, and what the Sharks will need to do to overcome that.

Target number one for me is Brian Campbell. The rental defender of the year according to analysts, this soupy monster was supposed to solidify an already decent San Jose defense, and up until this point, I have seen next to nothing from him this series. We can ignore any heroics during the Calgary series, and the 10-15 games played prior to the playoffs, because everyone knows in the life of a hockey player, the playoffs are the only games that matter. If they want any sort of chance of getting back into this series, let alone winning the series, they are going to have to have Campbell step up and play 25 minutes of stellar hockey.

Jeremy Roenick, the guy who can not decide whether he wants to be brilliant or worthless, could almost top my list (if I did not expect him to already be retired). Threatened by elimination against Calgary, Roenick came up massive scoring two goals and two assists. This effort either needs to be duplicated every game, or Roenick needs to give his time on the ice to a younger player with more heart. There is no reason for a player to dominate every other night.

Oh captain, your captain… Patrick Marleau has been a ghost in this series, aside from a couple brilliant plays by his linemates (example being the breakaway pass last night, which yes, he did finish). Now, I am not going to say Marleau has played BAD hockey, but I do believe he needs to find a more versatile style of play as a captain, especially when you have guys like Thornton playing for the same team.

And how about the guy that everyone likes to say falls asleep during the playoffs? This year, I do not believe it is the case. If San Jose wanted to take a few bright lights out of this run at the cup, they can look to Thornton, Mitchell, and Michalek. These guys have been names in the announcers mouth from game one, and continue to work towards getting the puck on net. Big Joe is getting the shots that could go either way, and with a little luck, they will go his way.

All of these examples are not meant to magnify who is playing badly for the Sharks, because I really do not think that is the case. What I have seen is a Dallas team go from an average level, to an elite level of hockey during the last two games in the latter stages. They are taking advantage of a Sharks team that seems to be one dimensional in their play, and creating chances from nothing, which are equating in goals. What does that mean? It means that if the Sharks want to compete in the playoffs, they are going to need to find another way to win that does not revolve around talent.
