While sifting through the morning articles, something stopped me in my tracks. Jan Hejda and the Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to a three year deal worth six million dollars. Now, I am not going to pretend as though Hejda is the greatest defensemen to play the game, but I will tell everyone right now, that is an absolute steal for what most would consider a non-hockey market team.

So I have to give some major kudos here. To Howson for putting this number on the table knowing fully well what Hejda could acquire on the open market takes brass, and that is the kind of signing that can easily help to define a roster for the upcoming year. To Hitchcock for working well with Hejda and giving him the freedom and respect to play against the oppositions best players, even though his numbers were not a definition of his abilities. And finally, I want to give kudos to Jan himself. He and his agent knew they could receive well over that over on the market, but chose Columbus because of its’ familiarity and a general interest in the organization.

So let’s stop and take a snapshot of this signing. All the alleged superstars vying for 10 million could learn a lot from this kid. This is the definition of a home team discount, and should resonate throughout the league as one of the better signings of the year in terms of feasibility. A purely defensive defensemen, Hejda can provide Columbus with the necessary backend help to assure their first playoff berth in 2009, provided Howson continues into the summer, making full use of the twenty million in cap space.

All of these factors are what gives Hejda Danada’s two thumbs up signing of the month.
