This was simply a hell of an effort reminiscent of another Marty who wears a Devils jersey. The thing is it is now the playoffs and this Marty from Philly....I hear he's pretty good....when he isn't playing the Devils of course. Yes I am talking about Marty Biron who turned in another gem of a performance to essentially keep Philadelphia not only alive but in a position of strength heading into a pivotal Game 4 on Wednesday.
So the hardcore numbers were stunning...34-14 were the shots on goal in this game in favor of Montreal. From what I saw in the first period...it looked like the Habs were controlling the game. The weirdest thing is this there are times where Biron looks completely shell shocked and yet doesn't pay the penalty for it. He has dodged so many bullets in just three games in this series and the 7 against Washington but at the same time he has just made some saves that border on the insane. By the way the scoring chances were 22-9 Habs just so you know.
The other player in the picture above is Mike Richards and well needless to say the future Flyers captain has been impressive in the postseason for his steady play and leadership and oh yeah that ability to score a short handed goal now and then. With the score 1-0 Flyers after a Scottie Upshall goal the wheels fell off for the Habs and Carey Price. Richards picked off a cross ice feed and was off and away....he got off a shot that went off Price's glove and into the net and the top came off the arena in Philly like a top. It was nuts....felt like 140 or 150 decibels at least even on the television...pretty awesome stuff. Jeff Carter poked the puck away from Carey Price and RJ Umberger deposited the one timer into the net for a 3-0 Philly lead and after two that was it for Carey Price.
Then Philly's physicality nearly cost them as Derian Hatcher got a 5:00 major for making Francis Bouillon's body look like road kill. Never ever give a team like the Habs life like that. Because Montreal quickly pounced and scored twice on that major. Goals by Tomas Plekanec and Saku Koivu made it 3-2 and quite honestly there were several point blank chances that probably should have went in but Marty Biron, the Flyers, and a few friendly posts held the fort to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead in the series as the game ended 3-2.
The bigger question now in Montreal is can Carey Price get his game back? Two of the three goals were rather questionable and his lack of ability to be assertive when the puck is near the net is alarming. But Guy Carbonneau says he is starting in Game 4....honestly I like the way Jaroslav Halak is playing. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to make a change at this point. Apparently Bob Gainey has Carbonneau drinking the Rouge Kool-Aid because they may be going down with the ship on this one unless something changes and quick.
So Montreal can generate the chances but Philly consistently makes the most of their opportunities. It sounds like the downfall of a favorite to me and reminds me of the 2003 Red Wings except they got swept in the first round. I see quite a few similarities even in some of the goals scored on the favored team and yes the Habs are still the favorites to win this series ultimately but I am now more than questioning it...I am starting to doubt it. Time will tell what happens Wednesday but Carbonneau better have a quick hook at the ready.
So apparently another loss has dropped me to 6-3 in the second round...it looked so promising until I picked the Sharks in their Game 2....UGH!!!! Okay time to get back on the winning wagon.
Detroit 4 Colorado 2
NY Rangers 3 Pittsburgh 2 (OT)
Dallas 3 San Jose 2 (OT)
Maybe today will be a better day than the last two....I can only hope.
