Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another addition of "Ask A Panelist..."  This week, we were lucky enough to receive a question from the NHL Arena's lovely Minnesota Wild GM Patty.  She asked;

"How do you think the smaller clavicle protectors and knee pads for goalies this season will affect scoring?  Or will it not have an affect whatsoever?"

Well Patty, I am going to both answer and respond to this question.  This year will certainly see a different pattern of scoring, but you have to wonder whether these minor changes to goalie equipment will really have a strong effect on the number of goals scored.

Sure, taking down the size of goalie pads will increase the capacity to score form the point when there is a lot of traffic down low (assuming people have the capacity to shoot low from the point) but I certainly do not think it will have an effect on the general gameplay.  All they have have done with the padding is forced goalies to get a bit more creative rather than falling down in the crease to stop the puck.  Goalies like Marty Brodeur who I believe to have smaller than average pads are already practicing this better quality of play.

Regarding the clavicle protector, I really don't see this as a very large adjustment at all to the gameplay in the league.  In fact, considering where on the goaltender wears said equipment, one could definitely consider it a moot point when considering the amount of saves per season made by said equipment that would have resulted in a goal had it not been there.

In reality Patty, I believe these changes were based on a few guys sitting around in a room trying to fill a report with things that ought to be adjusted.  I think they will need to work more on finding ways to deal with the issue of massive chest protectors and oversized blocker and gloves without hindering any safety towards the netminders.  That in itself should allow for a higher level of scoring, without compromising the game that has been known well by all fans for decades.  (aka - NO MORE RULE CHANGES!)

Thanks again for your question Patty.  Join us again next week, where we can hopefully answer a question from another new reader.
