As announced, TSN is saying that Avalanche Captain Joe Sakic has signed a one year contract. As of yet terms has not been disclosed. Only 24 hours after word out of the Sakic camp was he had still not decided. Sakic made up his mind. It was the decision everyone expected Joe Sakic coming back for one year. Now we have to wait roughly 10 months to have “What will Joe do discussion” again.

"Ultimately, it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing," said Sakic, who won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 and 2001. "I'm comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I'm ready for the start of [training] camp."

I still don’t understand the timing of the announcement. He has kept the fans waiting this long, why choose the week of the Democratic National Convention??? Is it something he was hoping to keep under the radar?? Was he trying to steal the Democrats thunder in Denver?? Maybe he is trying to deflect attention off of his future and onto his charity for his event tomorrow? Really who cares though the important thing is he is back for the next season. The official press conference is scheduled for next week.

With all the veteran free agents out there still trying to find their path, Sakic did the honorable thing. He decided. Sundin, Shanahan, Selanne and Forsberg should take a page out of his book. I suspect in the next week or so the fate of the other future Hall Of Famers will be determined. Once again it is the 20 year veteran Captain leading the way.


Will the floodgates open again this offseason? The next week should tell the tale.
