All Star Weekend is kind of an awkward time for me. Yes I am about as diehard a fan as they come. But I mean, after all, it is just an exhibition. It is indeed cool to see all the young stars and all stars strut their stuff. However, for some reason the past few years I just haven't enjoyed it as much. I think I have found the reason why perhaps.
The last few years, the competition just got too gimmicky if you will. Too much tinkering with events and you didn't always see the real elite players in them. Unlike past years, where you saw the Bourques, Messiers...etc....etc...it had just gotten too bogged down in semantics. So as I am perusing up and down the new 2007-08 Dodge Superskills event, I see some welcome changes. I would also watch the video as it was surprisingly informative.
Though most of the things are the same...the order is interesting to say the least. The obstacle course relay which is always fun is followed by The Fastest Skater. I will pick Niedermayer for fastest skater by the way...though Ovechkin may come real close. Now this is where it gets interesting....next up is the elimination shootout. Note the rules. Once the qualifying is over...it is truly an elimination....someone has to score to advance...very simple. The last player that scores wins...I like that.
Now intermingled in the skills competition is the YoungStars game. I have already heard how last year's was such a joke...etc...etc. With the running time and everything...the game counts as points to the conference that wins. There are just 2 twenty minute periods of running time...so hopefully that will alleviate some of the problems along with faster puck drops and 3 on 3 action. It will be a cherry pickers dream but it will not be dull. Maybe not for the purist, but at the same time more for the kids.
Then we get to one of the true staples of the competition...the accuracy shooting. Every year I watch this just to see if anyone can go 4 for 4. It is also harder than it looks and yet I marvel at how guys like Bourque and Messier used to do this with such ease. Always a fun thing to watch...just to see all the coordination involved. I think a guy like Ovechkin could win it this year.
Onward and upward to the hardest shot. Speed kills or in this case speed just blisters off a hockey net at breakneck speed leaving a fan in jaw dropping awe. Anyone who used to see the old ones and watch guys like Iafrate and MacInnis fire the biscuit at 105 mph + knows just how fast a puck travels. So who are my picks this year......I was going to say Pronger at first but now I am going to go with Zdeno Chara of the Bruins.
Finally...the breakaway challenge. I am thinking the NHL is molding this part like the Slam Dunk event in the NBA but I could be wrong. Points are awarded for the puck actually going in (that amazingly helps) but for also the creativity of the attempt. This is a wildcard for me as I could see many guys winning this. Who stands out? Hmmm.....truthfully I am not sure...but maybe a dark horse emerges in this one and steals it. I am thinking possibly Patrick Kane or Rick Nash. I will probably be wrong but you never know.
At any rate, this is going to be a lot of fun...and do check in tomorrow for The NHL Arena's GDT for the All Star Game....expect the unexpected.
