Ever since its inception into the league, I have actively disrespected the trades that are better known as “rental player trades.” Each year, the teams that think they have a shot take a stab at a few of the big named players that are going to become free agents in the summer, and in return, they offer up most of the young future of the team. Is it worth it? I suppose an Ottawa team with Gary Roberts could have made the difference against Anaheim last year, but it would have cost them probably Lee, and a few other solid prospects.

As most know, Bryan Murray has made it extremely clear that he is shopping. Throwing Emery and Gerber’s name out there throughout the past couple months, and suggesting that he is willing to trade away roster players could do any number of things to the confidence of the overall team moral, but he has yet to find a trading partner, and thus, the team lives on.

I am not prepared to sit here and suggest that adding a guy like Forsberg or Hossa would do harm to the team, but I think it goes so much further than that. Hossa comes at a price, probably a roster player or two, and a prospect, which is a lot considering Ottawa knows they don’t have the cap room to re-sign Hossa to another year. Forsberg on the other hand is dwindling between being capable of playing or not, making him a potentially massive liability down the home stretch.

The point here is that Ottawa should not be taking the traditional approach to the playoffs this year. Their offense is surprisingly efficient right now, with guys like Fisher about to hit twenty goals on the year, and Vermette and Kelly always a threat on the PK. They OUGHT to be concerned with their back end. Whether they like it or not, Gerber and Emery are both extremely touchy, streaky players, and will be highly unlikely to lead Ottawa to their first cup in almost 100 years. Maybe taking another shot at Rob Blake might be their best bet, assuming he takes over the defensive corps and makes them impenetrable. Either way, the only shots you can guarantee out of those two are from the point with lots of vision, and even then you need to watch for a rebound.

Let’s hope Murray is smart about his trades this late in the year. Ottawa is going to need solid younger players to fill in the gaps thanks to the 20 million committed to only a couple players in the next couple years.
