Well it is Monday and more importantly.....regular season hockey returns tomorrow. Sadly no picture today....as well I am starting the spring semester at College Of The Desert in my quest for a culinary degree. So in both "arenas" it is a new beginning in a way. Time to take a look back and a look ahead.

Yesterday's All-Star Game was a good bit of fun to watch. Maybe just maybe...not having Brodeur or Luongo there yesterday let the spotlight shine on some of the lesser known players not named Crosby. Who knew that it would be a Staal who would take home the MVP. Eric Staal would have 2 goals and an assist on the night...his assist set up the game winner from Marc Savard, who received some considerable cheers after he left a couple years ago for Boston.

Now granted folks...I did watch a replay of this game but with some of the star power gone...I had to say in some ways I liked it more. My highlight was this one from Evgeni Nabokov on Ilya Kovalchuk....two times on the doorstep. Yes, Nabokov only faced 8 shots...but these two were of the highest quality. Here ya go.......

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxSa7J6YlU0&rel=1]I also wanted to thank NHLVideo from Youtube for the game if anyone wants to see the more comprehensive highlights. Here's that one too.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb6bTnnUfZg&rel=1]Thomas did make an outstanding save on a 3 on 1....as Niedermayer looked poised to score....and now he didn't stop just one...but he stopped a second on Datsyuk. Then Legace who played real well early in the third stood tall not 1...2...3...but 4 times. Sure I would like to see a little more hitting but I know that isn't going to happen. Some of the saves in this third period made you wonder how only 7 goals were scored seriously. Emrick does embellish things a bit....but damn you had to smile watching that third period go back and forth. It was nice to see a close and exciting all star finish.

Most embarrassing moment had to go to poor Rick DiPietro...who got scored on 12 seconds into the game. As Emrick and the guys are talking to him about his hip....Rick Nash comes in and just scores on him. Whoops!

Now a look ahead....with the regular season getting back into gear tomorrow with 11 games....the post-season races can finally get going in full swing...and the 3 way race for the Atlantic (hockey's toughest division). Is it going to be a fun second half? You better damn well believe it. Also with the trade deadline just a little over 4 weeks away and most fantasy league playoffs starting in about 5 weeks....things are about to get very interesting.

Though Fantasy Hockey 101 will be taking the day off today.....here is a little bit of a teaser though. Expect a few players to see a surge off their All-Star Game performances. Kind of a fab 4 if you will impromptu style (but in no particular order).

Evgeni Nabokov (G) -- San Jose Sharks

Yes he only made 8 stops....but the 2 on Kovalchuk were huge when the East could have gone up 3 heading into the third. His stock went up a good bit from his second period performance.

Brian Campbell (D) -- Buffalo Sabres

This cemented his status as one of the best offensive d-man in the Eastern Conference. His two way play in yesterday's game even overshadowed the great ones like Niedermayer and Lidstrom. One goal...two assists (including an awesome feed to Staal who fed Savard for the GWG)...and it seemed like he was all over the ice. He will be very sought after in leagues and amongst teams heading to the deadline and then maybe the frenzy if he isn't signed. Buffalo needs to sign him ASAP.

Rick Nash (W) -- Columbus Blue Jackets

Yep..the hat trick. The guy just excels in the mid season showcase and it can only help him fantasy wise for the second half. By the way, he led all players with 7 shots on net and some of those moves he made were just downright evil. Columbus can definitely stay in the playoff race if he keeps this up.

Tim Thomas and Eric Staal were a tie for different reasons.

Thomas for his second half of the third period performance where he just shut the door on the West in that last 9:03. Staal's was more of a consistent, solid hustling effort all night where he tallied 2 goals and an assist...it was why he was named MVP after all. Both will see some definitely bump in fantasy leagues.

So all in all, I am ready for the regular season to get started again...and get on the road to the trade deadline, the playoffs, and The Stanley Cup. What a fun ride this will be!!
