Who's Wearing That Number?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to have to pull together and regroup for the second half of the season.  But don't let Versus or Sportscenter lead you astray thinking that because Sidney Crosby is out, trouble is ahead.  Also, let's not fall into the trap they're setting that it is because Crosby is out, that there is reason for concern.

The reason for concern is that Crosby, Colby Armstrong, Adam Hall, Gary Roberts, Marc-Andre Fluery, and Mark Eaton are all hurt with a variety of injuries.  The Pens can play well missing Crosby or any one or two players.  But when this many get hurt at the same time, it isn't going to be pretty.  In last night's game, the third line was completely composed of players called up the day before from the WBS Baby Penguins. 

If this keeps up, the majority of the team will be made up of players from WBS, and as well as they were playing on that team, playing against NHL'ers full time will be a challenge to say the least.  Some of the injured, Eaton is gone for the season, Roberts has a broken leg, (and as good of shape he is in, let's not forget how old he is), Fluery and Crosby with high-ankle sprains, all are long tern injuries, taking many man games from the team.

Armstrong and Hall have minor injuries that hopefully will be back soon.  Crosby is in great shape and he should heal fast too.  General Manager Ray Shero needs to be patient and yet open minded about what's happening to his team. The playoffs were a certain goal for the Penguins this year, but throwing away long term success for this season is not an option.

Remember, Crosby is not the entire team, no matter what the media outlets say.  But when a majority of everyday players start a parade route to the sick bay, it is time to worry a little and plan for what may become a very disappointing ending to a very good season so far.  Let's hope that doesn't happen.
