It is Monday, Cold War time. So the weekend is over and I think we can agree Tampa was the most active. They are taking the 99 Rangers approach to hockey and buying everything in sight. Now from watching years of hockey this approach rarely works. Tampa has the opportunity to build a solid team from the ground up with some key pieced in place. They however are deciding on trading all their draft picks to get exclusive rights to negotiate with free agents. We saw Philly do this last year with some success. Philly already had a lot of pieces in place and spread out the talent doing it with both defensemen and forwards.

What Feaster failed to realize is you cannot win without defense. He should know this by now he won a Cup relying on a great goaltender and solid defensive play. I am a fan of the guys they traded for Malone, Roberts, Rolston and Prospal are all solid players. However without knowing what Mike Smith can do in net, why invest so heavily up front. Now rumors are starting that Tampa wants to trade their best defenseman in Dan Boyle who they fought so hard to sign during the season. Who is running this organization Mickey Mouse? One thing I learned in all my years of watching/playing hockey is DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE. Without people to man the blue line you can’t win. Unless they make a splash for one of the numerous defensemen in free agency, I see Mike Smith getting shell shocked by facing 45 shots a game. Melrose is a guy who claims to know the game. He should know from his experience with the Kings that you can have Gretzky, Kurri and Robitaille and still not win a Cup. They had a lot of firepower, but the Habs were able to beat them with sound defense. It seems with they way this Tampa team is being put together Melrose will be able to have a flashy team with no substance.

Now with the acquisitions of Malone, Rolston and Prospal, I strongly feel the NHL needs to launch a full scale investigation. I find it a little odd that these three players end up in Tampa before the start of free agency. Malone’s father Greg is Tampa’s head scout, Rolston’s old teammate Wes Walz is now a coach with the Lightning and Prospal well he was on the Lightning a few months ago. I can not see these three players going there as coincidence. I have a sick feeling that there was some collusion going on. This is not like trading a right to match a RFA, instead this is giving a team draft picks to allow them to talk to a player for week. It’s a joke and needs to be looked into. Of course with new ownership, a recognizable face in Melrose and a city the NHL desperately wants to succeed in the Board of Governors will turn their heads. It’s a damn shame too, because these actions are the things that make the NHL look bad.
