Nothing like a cool wind in the face to get Monday going...the day before all hell breaks loose and free agents go absolutely everywhere in creation. Now someone apparently forgot to tell these teams that the frenzy starts tomorrow because there was a flurry of activity yesterday that was quite interesting to say the least.
In the afternoon, Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts were signed. Malone's terms were 7 years at 31.5 mill (4.5 per season) and Roberts was 1 year at 1.25 mill with a stipulation he gets 10,000 dollars for every game played. If he plays all 82...he could get as much as 2.07 million. Some will say Tampa overpaid for Malone but really it was not nearly as bad as many were expecting. When the number came in, several people thought the contract was for 5 or 6 years...turns out it really was seven.
The action picked up considerably in the evening. The Avs resigned some of their players including Adam Foote to a modest two year deal and Scott Parker to a one year agreement. The big one for them was the four year contract to keep John-Michael Liles in Colorado. Though it should set them back for around 17 million, he is signed, sealed, and delivered. Expect one of those nice, shiny press conferences later today.
Kevin Lowe jumped into the frenetic fire so to speak by trading away defenseman Matt Greene and forward Jarret Stoll for LA Kings defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky. Edmonton essentially got a top tier caliber player on D for a role guy and a forward they felt was expendable with the development of their younger players. Stoll isn't that old (26) but Lowe has a plan I am presuming. He may not be quite done yet. As for Los Angeles, they get rid of an older player so they can get younger. That is great and all but when are they actually going to improve some. You don't want to be on year 30 of a five year rebuilding plan. A solid move for Edmonton.
Lastly, I told you Tampa was not done. Tampa acquired the negotiating rights to Brian Rolston of the Wild in exchange for a conditional pick. The pick will either be in 2009 or 2010 and also depend on whether Tampa actually signs Rolston and when Minnesota picks in either draft. Give the Bolts credit here....they are trying to make a splash here and though they have many needs...the team is trying to fill them before the gun even goes off tomorrow. What impact will this have on the market? It will likely make things go faster this week as teams will want to get in on the action before its too late.
It is the nature of the frenzy...where hockey heats up and when it cools down...your team could be left in the cold. That is the beauty of the free agency period. Will anything else happen today? It could and we'll bring it to you right here!
