During the course of a normal, regular season, back-to-back games against a divisional foe is a great way to spend a couple of days watching hockey.   And other than a possible 8 point swing between the two teams, there is little more to be worried about.   But this year, the schedule makers made a monumental decision in the schedule.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers end this regular season with a home-and-away series which could very well decide the fate of wether the Flyers go golfing or continue on to the playoffs.   Normally, this would be exciting and there would be nothing to worry about.  But this isn't a normal season, and these are not normal players anymore.

Head shots, late hits and all around cheap shots have been happening more frequently than in any other season, and players have been suspended left and right for crossing the line.   Both of these teams have had players sit do to indiscretion on the ice.  But one team seemed to enjoy it and flourish because of it.  Yes, the Broadstreet Bullies.

So, what happens if the Penguins win the first game and eliminate the Flyers from post season play?   Will the Flyers be mature enough to come out and play a hard, tough, but legal hockey game?   Or will the "We're out so we're going to take as many players of yours as we can" mentality kick in?  With this team, who knows.

The playoffs would be less exciting if key players from one team were out due to injury caused by the stupidity of players on the ice.  With hockey being the fastest, hardest hitting, most demanding game being played in sports, injuries will happen.   And we all know we love the hard hit in open ice, the bone jarring check into the boards or the player giving up his body to stop a shot.  As long as it is legally done, it makes for great hockey.

But this year, players thought processes have wandered away somewhat.  Let's hope for a tough, skilled, exciting finish to the season.

And not to the players on the ice.
