Well Week 1 is in the books and it appears so far that the Penguins fan (bbbarrasso) has delivered the first major punch in this two week battle with Project Mayhem (Islanders fan). After week 1...it is 8-2 but more importantly the key battle of goaltending appears to be all going to the bbb right now. Here is why.

BBB has Conklin, Huet, and Miller. Huet is carrying his team and with the Caps in the thick of it for the 8 spot or maybe even the 3 seed depending on how things break....Huet will need to be on top of his game and then some. That bodes well. Add in that Ryan Miller and the Sabres are still clinging to faint playoff hopes and it appears all is good for BBB's goaltending dominance to continue and that may spell doom for Mayhem at this point. All Mayhem can answer with is Nabokov. Leclaire is out for the season more than likely, Hasek had the flu for 3 or 4 days, and his pickup of Ersberg backfired completely. Problem is when the only semi viable goalie out there in the league is Martin Gerber....panic may begin to set in. Sometimes you are stuck with the hand your dealt with. If the goaltending doesn't improve for Mayhem, it may be an easy victory for BBB.

Then there is the race that is the LSHL...where the 3 teams that have been slugging it out for the past month it seems are still at it. The Hitmen are holding on to a slim three point lead over Damned and 7 points over Patty for the title. Honestly, Hitmen has had one of the healthier teams. In terms of offensive games played his 1237 is second to the Scrabblers (1277). That is a big key...you would be surprised. Just a little thing like that translates into enough extra points to keep the two challengers at bay...at least for now. At this point there is not much that can be tinkered with....this is going down to the last day. I still think if Patty can get her offense and goaltending in gear that she may just win this thing. But Damned may have the most firepower whereas The Hitmen have been solid up the middle. Talk about a quandry...it is still way too close to call.

So if you have a week left in your season...and you need help...now is the time to hit the waiver wire...don't do it on the weekend because usually quick fixes like that never, ever work. I saw it in a couple league where people picked up Ersberg from the Kings a day too late and when Dallas stampeded LA 7-2...I could almost say I told you so. It is too hard to ask a youngster to have to play that great that often. The Kings are awful when it comes to team defense and for every gem there are 2 or 3 clunkers on the way. Call that Dallas game a stinker if you will!!

The best thing to do is check rosters daily...make sure it is set and ready to go. You don't want to miss a day or a change that could be made easily. Injuries can be unexpected but lapsing on your team is the worst cardinal sin with a week to go. Not knowing that Hasek has the flu or Koivu is likely done for the regular season can make or break your fantasy season in an instant. Don't get caught napping....ever!! Good luck fantasy owners out there!!
