The finals are here...13 days of fighting till one emerges victorious and wins the first ever Stevens League crown. Last week didn't quite go as expected and the results were pretty much the exact reverse from what I predicted. Sometimes the team that has the advantage on paper turns out not to really have it at all. That does happen from time to time. It is why they play to win the game. So what happened last week...here is a quick recap of both the semifinal matchups.

#1 bbbarrasso DEF. #4 DENIZEN 6-3

Why did this happen? Simple really. Denizen's offense could not find the back of the net like barasso who found the net 18 times...and 8 of them were on the power play compared to 2 for DENIZEN. DENIZEN also had some shooters who hardly had any shots on goal like Stastny (the close margin 92-89) was a difference maker. Bbb also had Daniel Briere who had a 5 point week and a +4...the +4 being the more surprising number. Add that in with just barely enough goaltending as DENIZEN's goalies went winless...which was weird...and you had the makings of Bbb being the first finalist.

#2 Project Mayhem DEF. #6 Brindy 5-4

This was a weird matchup from the beginning that went right down to the last day. Curious enough....goaltending was fairly even but Mayhem pulled it out and that made the difference...that and Brindy tried to start just two goalies and hoped it would be enough. Well the three from Mayhem played pretty steady this week and that was enough. Offense was pretty even with Brindy dominating Goals, Pims, and SOG but the key was Power Play points and the +/- which he could not win. Strangely, points (28) were even but Mayhem had more on the man advantage (11-7). You would have expected guys like Heatley and Kovalev to do more there but they didn't. Sometimes it doesn't go all as planned but what do you know the two best teams are facing off in the finals...rare but true.

FINALS PREVIEW and Prediction.....

#1 bbbarrasso vs. #2 Project Mayhem

Get a steel cage for these two because for almost the next two weeks they are going to go at it. Two week finals are always the hardest to predict and most times the one that jumps out the first week holds on to win it but we will see here. Both teams are pretty evenly matched. Leclaire may be held out (concussion) for the rest of the season so that could play a role in goaltending strategy. Regardless with Hasek, Toskala, and Nabokov....Mayhem has an edge here. If Mayhem can get a quick enough lead, he can run away with the goaltending categories then worry about offense which is even on firepower...especially since Crosby should be returning very soon. This is one I have looked forward to the entire playoffs and should be something else.

Prediction: I just think Mayhem takes this 5-4...it will be very close all the way.

Onward to the LSHL. Just a quick update but today at least...and this could change by tomorrow....the Hitman has a slim 1 point lead over The Pats and 2 points over the Damned. Does anyone want to win this league...as a matter of fact...the readers think the same thing...with Damned and Patty in a dead heat. So this speaks volumes. The league has been close all year and will continue to be close. If it comes down to goaltending and injuries...the Hitman might just win this when all is said and done but I think Damned and Patty are still the favorites. Only time will tell.

So to anyone that is in their finals this week...I say good luck and hopefully you come out on top. If not, there really is always next year.
