Thank you nhl.com for the nice headshot.Yes I understand NBC and VS. have to do whatever they can to market the NHL as it is not an easy sport to market. Really no one has a problem with that when it is done in moderation. However, the time has come for NBC, VS., etc. to realize hey there are other Pittsburgh Penguins. This is not the Pittsburgh Crosby's.
So taking a look at the Penguins website....what do we see? Well there are a whole team of these hockey players from Pittsburgh. Now yes, Crosby is the Captain of the team but you know what is funny. When you look at the team roster page, he is mentioned second not first. Kris Beech is actually ahead of him...oh no...the blasphemy!!
Now granted, Sidney Crosby did score two goals last night and one was the game winner. The peculiar thing is Marian Hossa set him up twice. Hossa not normally known as a playmaker was called out by our own Danada on Tuesday in his Ask A Panelist column. May I say Danada, I think you woke him up. The Penguins may be known as a one man show in some circles but really they are much more.
This gets better. The goal that cemented the win was by Adam Hall of all people....WHO? Well for those who don't know much about him...especially outside of Pittsburgh or you are a more casual NHL fan. He was drafted by the Nashville Predators as a 2nd rounder in the 1999 draft. Hall signed with the Penguins this season as a free agent. A solid contributor who can win faceoffs in a pinch...he went 6 for 10 against Detroit last night. But when he called bank shot on Osgood...Emrick, Olczyk, and company sounded like they had an epiphany...sort of like...Crosby didn't do that? Well he didn't. Congrats to the guy from Kalamazoo.
Gary Bettman thinks Sidney Crosby can save the NHL. Maybe they should ask can the Pittsburgh Penguins save it or the Detroit Red Wings? There are great players fighting to their last breath to raise Lord Stanley's Cup at the end of this series. Hell look at former 2003 #1 draft pick Marc-Andre Fleury...all he did last night was hold off a Detroit onslaught (stopping 15 of 16 third period shots). Much was made of him being kind of a bust before the season started. All he has done is prove every critic wrong...including me. I surely am not laughing now with the Devils sitting home.
So a simple message to the television and media world....it is well and good that you think Sidney Crosby can market the sport and it needs to be all Sid the Kid all the time. But a good segment of your target audience is going to get turned off when you slam it down our throats with reckless abandon. On the biggest stage, it is not just about 1 player...it is about the teams there and the league as a whole.
