The Stanley Cup Finals goes Southeast about 400 miles to the city of Pittsburgh. The question on every fan's mind is will the fortunes shift? No one is really sure of that but one thing is for sure....barring a major attitude and philosophical adjustment...the Pittsburgh Penguins are in serious jeopardy of bowing out in very short order.
Now not all hope is lost here. The Penguins can come back but here are three things they no doubt need to climb back into this.
- DISCIPLINE
- FORECHECK
- More shots on net.
The first two are essential to achieve the third. It is a given that they have to feed off the home crowd and score...those are obvious. What they can't do is get drawn into a physical tit for tat like last night. To take a run at Johan Franzen several times like the Penguins did is inexcusable. Hard checking and the forecheck is what Pittsburgh needs. Those first two aspects by the way will also lead to more puck possession.
Personally I am hoping for a series here. It would be ashame to see a matchup like this turn into nothing more than a Detroit Anointment. Yes I did pick Detroit to win this in six so I am hoping for a bounce back from Pittsburgh and a resurgence from Crosby, Malkin, and Hossa. So far there are no signs of that...but in Detroit's last series....I was saying the same thing about Dallas. Basically, never say never in The Steel City.
