Take a look at some of the headlines this week so far. First off, the New York Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in 13 years. If that was not strange enough....USC loses tonight to Oregon State 27-21. Think about this...two of the more storied franchises have taken a huge hit to their pride and egos. What an amazing development!!
Now hockey obviously has not started its regular season yet. There have been some surprises in the preseason but nothing of the magnitude of a USC loss. But once the season starts.......expect some big upsets. Now these things may not happen at all but hey we are going to give this a quick shot here.
The Detroit Red Wings Will Not Repeat.
Mark my words...it will not happen. Whether its because of Marian Hossa or just the pressures of making through another two month grind from April to June again....the Wings just will run out of gas somewhere. Add in the fact that the defense is aging....Chelios is closer to 50 than 40 plus with Rafalski approaching 35 and Nick Lidstrom nearing 40...that just presents a few too many problems for my liking. I do also think there are too many offensive weapons much like a USC and this team will wind up beating themselves come playoff time in the first or secound round. That sounds crazy but then again....after the Wings won in 2002...what happened? Yes I thought so!
Tampa will give up over 300 goals this year.
Yes they will. This team has all the makings of having no defensive clue especially with Barry Melrose as coach. The mullet apparently gets in the way of figuring a way to stop the opposing team. Now Tampa may score around 300 but while they are scoring, teams are going to go the other way and score and score and score some more. Their oldest defenseman right now is Andrew Hutchinson who is 28 and has only 70 NHL games experience. That is not a good sign....add in an offensive first system and Mike Smith and Olaf Kolzig as your goalies and this just has the recipe to be an epic disaster.
The Pittsburgh Penguins may miss the playoffs.
This team has considerable injuries right now and not nearly the depth they had last season. The role players were traded for a one shot deal that did not pay out in a Stanley Cup. I am sorry guys like Fedotenko and Satan are not the answers for what they lost. No Whitney till at least Christmas is another blow and how will Gonchar come back from that dislocated shoulder will be important question. Teams that lose the Stanley Cup the past few years go through quite the nasty hangover. Add all these factors together and the Penguins have no real backup behind Marc Andre-Fleury (hope he can play 65-70 games) and this team has the recipe despite all the firepower to miss the playoffs altogether.
#13 Stays Home Till At Least Christmas
Yes the player that shall not be named will likely stay in Sweden. There does not appear to be an urgency for him to sign anywhere nor has he indicated one at all all summer. It is not about the money....it is clearly all about the heart and soul. Teams got tired of waiting and it seems the rest of the world has past #13 by. I can't say I feel sorry about him at all. As great of a player he is...he is not Joe Sakic nor will he ever be. That is the difference between a great player and a great leader plus player. So stay home and let the season start.....and home may just keep the former Toronto captain there for quite a long while. Time will tell.
So of course before we leave....here is a gaffe that led to an epic upset many years ago....enjoy!!
