Roy Not Deserving Of Honor

BallHype: hype it up!

The Avs retired Roy’s #…now the Habs’ turn!

Though probably firmly entrenched in the minority here. I do not feel Patrick Roy should have his jersey number retired in Montreal tonight. Why reward a player just because it is your team’s 100th anniversary and there is an undeniable historical linkage?

I want to point out Rocket’s contribution from All Habs this morning. Further proof that even a good deal of Habs fans do not want to see this happen even though they will oblige and clap for Roy. For too many, the memory still remains. Roy’s flamboyant personality transcended the ice for both good and bad reasons.

Now to throw that aside for just a moment. Here are Roy’s overall stats. The man did have an amazing career…4 Stanley Cups, 3 Conn Smythes, and 3 Vezinas.

Thanks to hockeydb as always.

Some will say there were better especially in the regular season but few matched Roy in the playoffs. The 10 OT wins in one playoff in itself was insane but remembering Sam Rosen say his name over and over in 1986 is firmly etched in my mind. In the city of Montreal, a dynamic presence is needed to deal with the Montreal media. Roy had that in spades. He had the numbers and the persona to be the show.

Problem is as we all know….is when you become that big that fast…the ego takes a one way trip to out of control land. As has been said so many times, things were long out of control before the night of December 2nd, 1995. Now of course Roy was not the only one to blame but when you are a media magnet. Expect to take the lion’s share of said blame.

Roy would go on to win 2 cups in Colorado (1996 and 2001) and posted probably his better career numbers between Montreal and Colorado. However, Roy will always be more remembered for his storied days as a Hab than anything else he does in life. That is for his on-ice contributions to the game of hockey. Those can not be disputed. Roy is a Hall Of Famer and one of the best goalies of all time…period!

Obviously he got in trouble in Quebec with his son and everything that has happened in his tenure with the Quebec Ramparts and maybe he gets too many passes for a good deal of his off-ice problems. However I still maintain that Roy’s retirement ceremony just should have been done later rather than sooner. Just because you have an anniversary does not mean you have to have something that will put more fannies in the seats. Clearly Montreal does not need help there.

Does Roy deserve the recognition? Yes. Should it be now? No! Tell me what you think should have been done here.
