BallHype: hype it up!

Well it became apparent this week that nothing is what it seems in the NHL...except for maybe the Detroit Red Wings and Martin Brodeur. Yes indeed the return of Martin Brodeur made a big impact last night but was it enough to keep the Devils in the top three? Time to find out!

The Program Top 10

1. Detroit Red Wings (40-13-8) LW:2 --
Yes they only went 2-1 this week but one of those two wins was against San Jose (4-1) and it was in pretty dominating fashion. There is pretty much one team that still rules the roost in the NHL and their record may not truly indicate it but it still is the Detroit Red Wings. Ty Conklin is their "glue" in net this year and if Chris Osgood ever gets it together. This may be a team that repeats come Spring. Maybe Marian Hossa was smart in signing with Detroit....just a hunch. One concern is that PK which is under 80% but other than that...they are still the best till they get beat in the playoffs.

2. San Jose Sharks (42-9-9) LW:1 --
San Jose goes 3-1 in the week that normally that would be enough to keep the top spot BUT they lost to Detroit and badly. They did play a playoff style this week in their three wins against (ATL, DAL, and OTT). However, they did play down a bit to their competition and I thought Brian Boucher was very good in Ottawa last night. I still maintain that he is just as good as Evgeni Nabokov and maybe better at times. Congrats to Patrick Marleau who is earning the $$ as he went 30-30 after this week. (30+ goals, 30 + assists). Sharks are at Montreal tomorrow then two tough home games against Dallas and Minnesota.

3. New Jersey Devils (39-19-3) LW:3 --
Yes we will take some heat for this one but facts are facts and Martin Brodeur is back with a vengeance. A 24 save shutout against Colorado at home in a 4-0 win on the surface is not all that impressive but considering he was out nearly four months....it is a good sign. Now last Saturday..the Devils had a total clunker against the Islanders but last night they played with conviction against Colorado. That kind of conviction will be needed as this week gets tougher. Back to backs at home on the weekend against Florida and Philly...then a Tuesday trip to Toronto will be a test for the Devils this week.

4. Boston Bruins (42-12-8) LW:4 --
They did win 2 games at home very convincingly against Florida and Anaheim but lost both games in Florida earlier in the week. Now as nice as the two home wins were...the second one was costly as Marc Savard and Milan Lucic both went down to injury. The homestand continues this week with WSH,PHI, and PHX. The first two could go a long way in reshaping the East especially around the trade deadline. Tim Thomas has to play spectacular. If Boston can just stay healthy...a very good homestand might just be enough to boost themselves back up in the old power rankings for next week.

5. Calgary Flames (36-18-7) LW: 7 --
A 2-0 week with wins over Edmonton and a big home win over Columbus buoy the Flames up 2 spots this week. Jarome Iginla is just a few points away from breaking Theo Fleury's scoring record and Miikka Kiprusoff is still rolling alone....he may get some votes for the Hart Trophy. Health is somehwhat of an issue with several injuries and Calgary may make a move or two at the deadline to bolster depth. This coming week will not be easy. Home against Minnesota and Tampa but on the road at Ottawa then Philadelphia. Kipper will have quite the workout this week!!

6. Washington Capitals (39-18-5) LW: 5 --
Normally a 2-2 week is not so bad but Washington nearly fell two spots as the one loss was a 4-1 stinker against the Colorado Avalanche who was still missing several of their key players. I still maintain goaltending and overall defense are profound question marks for this team and their play shows it. Sure Ovechkin leads the world in goals and Mike Green (D) has 23 goals but other than offensive prowess...the other two phases of the game are below average for the most part. A key week coming up as they go to Boston tomorrow then enjoy FLA, CAR, and TOR all at home!

7. Chicago Blackhawks (34-17-8) LW: 7 --
This team is on the cusp but without Khabibulin...as well as Huet has played...it is just not enough or the same. They went 8-4 on that weird backwards 12 of 13 road stretch to stay 4th in the West. Cristobal Huet went 1-2 for the week but still had a pretty nice week for the most part. Odd to say I know. With Sharp and Khabibulin still ailing....Toews, Kane, Havlat, and company need to step up and step up now as they are only 4-6-5 against the Central and their last 7 of the season are against their rivals. Good news is this week they have 3 games at home (PIT, LA, and ANA). It may be a nice week for some home cooking!!

8. Philadelphia Flyers (33-17-9) LW:8 --
A 2-1 week with a huge win against Washington and a sloppy win against LA mixed in with an early week heartbreaking loss to Pittsburgh 5-4. Everyone knows about the Biron gaffe but he did have a 34 save shutout against LA. So maybe he has turned the page there. Danny Briere is back tonight but the Flyers had to place Vaanaaen and Metropolit were put on waivers. It will be interesting to see who Briere plays with and if Richards and Carter continue to play well. Games this week are home against MTL and CGY sandwiched between road contests in NJ and BOS. Now that's a tough week!

9. Florida Panthers (31-22-8) LW:9 --
A 2-1 week for Florida but wow I love this team and I love how Vokoun is playing right now. Yes they got thumped by Boston 6-1 in Boston but they did beat Boston at home. Craig Anderson did make 40 saves last night as the Panthers came back from a 1-0 deficit at MSG to defeat the Rangers 2-1. Guys like Booth, Frolik, Weiss, and Horton are contributing to the cause and the key cog on the blueline is Jay Bouwmeeester obviously. Will he be traded? We will find out soon enough. Games this week: Road games at NJ, WSH, ATL, then home to PIT. Not an easy week!!

10. Vancouver Canucks (30-22-8) LW:NR --
A 1-1 week with a 3-2 win at Toronto followed by a 3-0 loss at Montreal. But overall the Canucks are one of the hotter teams right now in the NHL. 8-2 in their last 10 with the Sundin and Sedin twins clicking. Luongo is playing very well for the team at last. Though the Canucks are one slump away from slipping out. Right now, there are no signs of sinking on the surface at least. Games this week: Home against TAM, CBJ, MIN...two good tests!

Teams Left Out: Dallas, Columbus

Maybe next week He-Man will have the power to give some other teams a chance to make the Top 10....we shall see.
