Edmonton Going To The Recycle Bin....
Wow I can only think of what two of my Oiler friends (Kevin and Brad) are thinking right at this moment. Pat Quinn is now Head Coach of the Oilers and Tom Renney is Associate Head Coach. For more on the story....click here!
Now sure coaches should get a second chance and Tom Renney really did not have much in the crapfest that was the New York Rangers. But Pat Quinn is on his oh what 1546th chance? Maybe not quite. It is his 5th stop and really except for LA...he has had a winning record everywhere he goes....even Toronto and that is tough.
The drawbacks are obvious Pat Quinn is 66. He has kept active with Team Canada and all (yes they have had immense success under Pat) but he has never won a Stanley Cup and in Edmonton they are a hungry team. Quinn does dictate a bit more of a faster pace than Tom Renney. That "clashing of heads" should make for some very interesting meetings.
Not to mention the Edmonton Oilers have some very interesting decisions to make. Kevin Lowe and company have 5 UFA's....and Quinn has to figure out what kind of goalie he is going to have as Roloson last I checked is knocking on retirement's door and Dany Sabourin is about as ready to play goalie as Colin White is to scoring 10 goals.
Making Craig MacTavish go away finally was a good move for the progress of this young team and bringing in Quinn was something I would have definitely considered. However, throwing Tom Renney into the mix is very curious to say the least. Hey maybe it does work. The Oilers make the playoffs but how do you make the playoffs with a goalie that is nearing 40 and no real backups. Quinn and Renney are recycled and they are definitely going to have to conjure up something from this team to make that climb up the standings and into the playoffs. It will not be just as simple as throwing a bottle into the recycling bin...that is for sure!
