The Morning After:
My 3 stars from last night:
1. Chris Osgood (31 saves)
‘Ozzie’ was very solid for Detroit last night.
2. Evgeni Malkin (1 assist)
Despite the loss, ‘Geno was a force in Game 1… just couldn’t get anything through.
3. Johan Franzen (1 goal)
The Mule’s 11th goal was the eventual game-winner for the Wings.
Unsung hero of the night:
Darren Helm… What an effort from this kid. He won 73% of his face-offs, collected 8 hits and 2 shots, and continued to be a spark for Detroit.
‘RLD Game-Changing Performance’ of the night:
Detroit’s PK… Usually Pittsburgh’s power play can gather the MO even if they don’t score. That wasn’t the case tonight. The Wings swarmed the Pens’ pair of man advantages in the 2nd and swung the momentum their way for the rest of the game. If the Pens score on both or just one of those power plays, this game may have gone their way.

Game of the Night:
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Detroit Red Wings
Game 2, 8:00 ET… TV: NBC, CBC
Players to watch:
PIT- Max Talbot
Talbot got a couple good chances in Game 1. Look for him to be a physical and relentless player tonight.
DET- Darren Helm
Last year, Franzen was the Wings’ breakout player from almost nowhere. Helm is this year’s Franzen. Think about this… Helm has never scored a regular season goal, but may be one of the most important players in Detroit’s Cup run this spring.
Key thing to watch:
Pens’ power play vs. Detroit’s PK… As stated above, the Pens lost momentum last night by failing to score on back-to-back power plays. If that happens again tonight, Pittsburgh could start losing confidence.
Starting Goaltenders:
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury (Last night: 27 saves, 3 GA)
DET- Chris Osgood (Last night: 31 saves, 1 GA)
Injury Report:
PIT- Mike Zigomanis (undisclosed, out)
DET- Pavel Datsyuk (foot, questionable), Kris Draper (groin, questionable), Andreas Lilja (head, out)
Game Thoughts:
Pittsburgh NEEDS to win tonight… there’s no question about it. If they don’t, this series could be de ja vu from last year. Crosby & Malkin had chances, but couldn’t crack Ozzie. I think the Staal/Kennedy/Cooke line needs to play well for the Pens to grab the 'W'. Everyone talks about the Wings’ legs may be a bit tired tonight. Any other team, that may be true. But it’s Detroit, and I look for them to pick up where they left off last night. With that being said, the Pens know they must win tonight, and played well for most of Game 1… the bounces just didn’t go their way. I’ll say Fleury rebounds and the Pens win tonight in overtime.
Prediction: Penguins 4, Red Wings 3 (OT)
