Calgary Gets The Rights To Their Man!

BallHype: hype it up!

GM Darryl Sutter has pulled off a pretty big deal, reeling in the negotiating rights for Jay Bouwmeester - the top UFA defensemen this summer. Calgary gave up the negotiating rights to Jordan Leopold and a 3rd round pick.

Now the big question is whether the Flames can sign Bouwmeester by July 1 and fit him under the cap. I’m sure Sutter will want to keep both Jay-Bo and Dion Phaneuf. They have a bit less than $10 million to spend, which should be enough to sign Jay-Bo. With the need of a couple forwards, though, look for Cory Sarich or Robyn Regehr to get traded to either clear cap space or acquire a forward. Bouwmeester has said he wanted to sign in Western Canada this summer, so I’d be pretty confident that the Flames can lock him up by Wednesday.
