Four Goalies Battling it out for Canada

Today Hockey Canada announced the four goaltenders for the summer evaluation camp late this month. They are Jake Allen (Montreal Junior), Oliver Roy (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles), Matthew Hackett (Plymouth Whalers), and Martin Jones (Calgary Hitmen).

Hockey Canada just held their Program of Excellence goaltending camp, where the four above mention goalies took part along with Adam Brown (Kelowna), Gabriel Girard (Shawinigan), Jean-François Bérubé (Montreal), Adam Morrison (Saskatoon), Edward Pasquale (Saginaw), Scott Stajcer (Owen Sound), and Jamie Tucker (Vancouver)

Jake Allen and Roy (no relation to Patrick) were expected to be in the running according to my 2010 Canada Roster. Hackett came on really strong in the second half the season so I am not surprised to see him to be at this summer’s camp. Jones I am somewhat surprised but he was stellar this season with the Hitmen.

I know you want experience and this is a 19-year-old tournament but these goalies are so close I wouldn’t mind Roy being the back up in 2010. I am always looking one year ahead, so if I was the Hockey Canada, I would want Roy to be fully prepared for 2011 in Buffalo. I have to stick with my starter in Allen, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Hackett as the starter.

The other interesting note is Adam Brown not being invited to either the USA camp or the Canadian camp. He has dul citzenship and a few hours before Canada announced the four goalies, USA Hockey announced its Evaluation Camp Roster. I thought Brown would be on the roster so USA could possibly lock him for IIHF tournaments.

That’s My Take
