Yes it is the HISTORY ERASER button!
Good afternoon and welcome to Masterpiece Theater! Just kidding. There are times where you just wish your team could push the history eraser button like Ren And Stimpy. Wham! You could go back and actually change the course of your team's history and err future as well. One problem is the history eraser well erases anything. So whatever you do....don't push that button. Although for some teams and their fans...the thought may have been tempting during the first several days of the Frenzy.
Now the worst of the worst has some interesting criteria. First off, they have to be signings and no trades. Also, they have to have some tangible quality that just makes you say WHY did they do that. Even further we have a 1-5 red button scale. 5 being the worst and 1 being not quite so bad. Sorry no pictures of red buttons....Ren And Stimpy might come after us....or they may whizz on our electric fence. Scary proposition. Well here it goes.
Donald Brashear (NYR) 2 yrs, 2.8 million dollars
On the surface...it isn't all that bad. Then look at the age 37 and the fact that the last time Brashear was a viable player was in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Even his penalty minutes over the last two years (119 and 121) are way down from his numbers from just several years ago. For a guy that averaged 2.6 PIM's per game career....he is down to 1.9 in his last two years. Not exactly a great sign. As another blogger told me....what is going to do now....cheap shot someone? Sorry Mr. Betts....my bad!
That is another thing. Blair Betts is obviously not going to resign with the Rangers and we all know that. But hey let's sign the guy that effectively ended our playoff run by knocking out our best penalty killer. No one confused Glen Sather with a MENSA candidate and these type of signings further illustrate that the Rangers are likely not winning anything anytime soon.
Our Rating: 4 red buttons
Mike Komisarek (TOR) 5 years, 22.5 million $.
WHY? I tried to be nice here. I did...really...honest! Bottom line is for one how did this guy ever make the All-Star Team (Montreal fans who love ballot stuffing) and how could this guy get 4.5 million dollars for playing so badly? If anyone can defend this guy's contract...I really REALLY want to hear it. Andrei Markov probably should get royalties from Komisarek because it was Markov who covered up for a ton of Komisarek's blunders. When Markov was out against Boston in Round 1....Mike Komisarek was absolutely undressed by the entire Bruins roster it seemed.
Now I know Komisarek is a stay at home guy...but his numbers are getting worse by the year. He had a high of 19 points in 06-07 which dropped to 11 last season. By the way Komisarek had 4 points at the break yet played in the All Star Game. Enough said. His +16 in the last 3 years combined is not exactly stuff of legend and last I checked Toronto does not play very much defense. Either that, or someone hit the way back machine up there.
Just to add insult to injury...Komisarek was a -4 with 0 points and 2 dumb misconducts in the series against Boston and yet he got 4.5 million dollars from Toronto. Who knows what the Islanders offered him? The guy MIGHT be worth 2 to 2.5 million and I am being pretty generous. Sure big tall d-men are hard to find but in today's NHL...you need guys that can move their feet. Mike Komisarek forgets that memo often.
Our Rating: 5 red buttons
Jason LaBarbera (PHX) 2 years, 2 million $
Where do I begin? Hold the phone! Get me a case of the hardest stuff you got! How do you get 2 million dollars for crapping the bed most of your entire career? Someone really needs to get the drugs out of their system. This guy on a good day is worth maybe a 2 way contract but he got a mere 200,000 dollars less than Scott Clemmensen who at least took advantage of his glorious chance. LaBarbera went 6 under .500 in his and though his save % was respectable that year (.910). He had a 3.00 GAA giving up some of the most awful goals you would ever see....giving him the nickname....Hanna La Barbera!
Some will also say that he has not been given a fair chance either but he has been mediocre in the minors too (a la Clemmensen) but at least Clemmer was never traded for a 7th round pick in the middle of the season just so they could be rid of a guy. That is the ultimate slap in the face....the we just want you gone sign. When LA does that to you...you know your career is in the crapper. Did I mention Ty Conklin was available? Oops.
And yet Phoenix signed him to this deal. There are better guys out there I am sure of it. Make a trade for Kari Lehtonen if you have to....sheesh. Even Ondrej Pavelec would be a considerable upgrade. Justin Pogge might be able to do better. I am just saying if you hit the ugly bus....there is no way of getting around this one. Next time do some homework Phoenix. This was just plain DUMB!
Our Rating: 5 red buttons
Colton Orr (TOR) 4 years, 4 million $
Yes another one by Toronto. Not as bad as the Komisarek deal or even the Brashear one because Orr is younger and its only for a 1 million dollar cap hit. But nonetheless...pretty bad. Toronto may just be the most penalized team next year and have the most suspensions. Colton Orr can at least fight unlike Donald Brashear at times but for a 4th line guy....his defense and +/- is not going to impress anyone anytime soon. Unless of course they are reading the numbers upside down perhaps. ( -28 the last 2 years by the way.)
Hmmm. We know Colton Orr will never score and he will never put pucks on net at a NHL caliber level. But he did have a career high 5 points last year. He might break 10 in Toronto's laissez-faire system. At the worst, Toronto will be a team you may want to bring medikits for and also eyes behind the back of your head.
So though not quite as horrendous as Komisarek's deal....this one is pretty bad. Using the rating system and a case of beer. Here goes nothing.
Our Rating: 4 red buttons
Sami Pahlsson (CBJ) 3 years, 7.95 million $
I may take some heat for this one. But since the 2007 Stanley Cup....no checking center's stock has dropped more than Pahlsson....not even John Madden. Last year in Anaheim he was a -16 in just 52 games. It was a sign and not even the mono could hide it. Yes I said mononucleosis. The bottom line was Pahlsson once played shutdown D and chipped in a little offensively. He was even a Selke nominee once. That seems like ancient history now.
His +/- is misleading but last year raised too many red flags. There were several bonehead plays that were not like Pahlsson. Early in the year he looked horrendous and almost was waiting for the life preserver to be thrown. He did play a bit better in Chicago and had a pretty good playoff. However this kind of reward (money wise) may have been a bit much.
Pahlsson is only 31 and he can turn it around in Columbus in a defense oriented system. Question is....is he really worth this much money? He may or may not be honestly.
Our Rating: 2 red buttons
So we are sure that we may have left someone off the list that deserves your ire but if you have anyone that you feel deserves the wrath...throw it in the comments. I am interesting in seeing what people come up with. Thanks again.
