The deal: 1 years, $3.25 million
The longtime captain of the Montreal Canadiens has decided to take his game to SoCal! Saku Koivu signed a 1-year deal with the Ducks today, joining his good friend Teemu Selanne. Koivu reportedly had offers from the Wild and Devils, among others, but decided to head west. The 34-year old posted 52 points in 65 games with the Habs last season.
Koivu makes the Ducks complete, if you ask me. They now have a 2nd line center to go with Selanne and Joffrey Lupul, and he’ll add on to the leadership that they already possess in the locker room. I really like this move by GM Bob Murray as he’s done a magnificent job since replacing Brian Burke in the middle of last season. Koivu persevered through many obstacles with the Canadiens, including cancer in the 2001-02 season.
According to nhlnumbers.com, Anaheim still has $9+ million left under the cap. If they can re-sign RFA James Wisniewski and maybe another veteran d-man, this team could challenge for the #1 seed in the West. Look out San Jose… you have company atop the Pacific!
*Note: This signing was predicted correctly in our frenzy preview!! We are now 16/35...
