The fall of the best 2010 recruiting class?

With the Michigan Wolverines ice hockey team struggling this year (5-7), the 2010 recruiting class could be affected. Before 2010, the Wolverines lost 2008 Los Angeles Kings 3rd round pick Robbie Czarnik to the Plymouth Whalers today.

Now the early signing period ended last week and Michigan early signings doesn’t include the potential top goaltender for the 2010 NHL Draft Jack Campbell who’s OHL rights belong to the Windsor Spitfires.

Michigan got most of these recruits two-three years ago. Jon Merrill who’s listed as one of the early signee’s verbally committed at the age of 14. Merrill’s OHL rights belong to the Plymouth Whalers

Kevin Clare’s OHL Rights belong to Erie.

Luke Moffatt was the 2nd overall pick by the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) in 2007.

Mac Bennett, a third round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2009, QMJHL rights belong to the Gatineau Olympiques. Bennett went to Canadiens training camp for a couple of days and their rumors he would end up in Gatineau.

Jacob Fallon is a free agent in the WHL.

Chris Dilks of Western College Hockey had this to say about 2010 prized goaltender recruit Jack Campbell.

More damaging for Michigan is that I've now heard from a couple of different sources that 2010 goaltending recruit Jack Campbell never signed a letter of intent with Michigan during the early signing period. I haven't heard anything official about a de-commit or making an agreement with Windsor of the OHL, and the Big Ten does have stricter rules about the early signing period, but you'd have to imagine getting Campbell in the fold would have been priority 1A for Michigan.
Update: Here is Michigan press release on their early signers, with no mention of Campbell.

Update II: It's looking like Campbell will end up signing with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL at some point, probably once he is done at the NTDP.

I am not going to speculate on Campbell because the last time I did without double checking my sources, I got a friendly e-mail from USA Hockey. All I will say is it will be interesting to follow this story for the rest of the year. Last year at this time Brandon Maxwell de-committed from Boston College while at the NTDP, saw his right traded to Windsor from Erie. He was later dealt to Kitchener where he’s backstopping the Rangers this year.

The only good news for Red Berenson, Michigan’s head coach, the talk of Ann Arbor is if Rich Rodriguez will be back for a third year as head football coach.
