Top 5 goalie masks

BallHype: hype it up!

One of the more unique dynamics of hockey is the goalie mask. It’s something that separates hockey from the other sports. It has evolved over the years, and now we’re at a point where the masters of the crease have anywhere from team logos to scary creatures painted on their mask (or nothing at all – Osgood). I personally love looking at the different designs each goalie has, and how they some change ‘em yearly, or some don’t mess with it. Most will incorporate the team’s city history in unique fashion.

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the goalie mask. On November 1, 1959, Jacques Plante donned the first in NHL history. To celebrate, I’ll countdown my top five favorite masks from recent memory…

1. Ilya Bryzgalov, Coyotes
This just might be the coolest one (above) out there as the whole desert look is awesome. It’s a perfect look for a Coyotes-themed mask.

2. Josh Harding, Wild
This was Harding’s mask from last season, and it’s a good one. The pond hockey setting is sweet, and the icicles around the logo give it a nice touch.

3. Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames
He’s since tweaked this one, switching the black background to white (and the skulls to red). It’s as intimidating a mask you’ll see in this league, and it’s what you'd expect from a goalie playing with the Flames.

4. Roberto Luongo, Canucks
I have not yet seen him where this one this season… I wish he wore this over his classic-looking lid. This one features Johnny Canuck, and the ‘C’ on the chin since he’s the captain. Very nice looking mask!

5. Cristobal Huet, Blackhawks
Talk about a classic look. Huet’s mask this year is awesome. The design is aligned well with the Indian hair and feathers, and the dream catcher on the chin adds a nice touch. It’s rare when you can say that a goalie’s mask is better than his actual play!
On a more historical note, I really liked Gerry Cheever's unique mask, along with Ed Belfour's rotating color scheme with the Eagle-themed mask.
What is your favorite??

John Blue's mask from the early 1990s with the Boston Bruins. Just black and very classy.
