NHL Draft Rewind 2003

BallHype: hype it up!

Thanks again to Ryan over at the Red Light District. Time Warner continues to play havoc with the internet and everything else. We have been told to expect full service by late this afternoon hopefully. And now the 2003 draft flashback. Do note just how deep this draft was even if there were a few busts and one very pronounced one from New York. We may even touch on this topic tonight on the podcast.

Top 10 picks:
1. Marc-Andre Fleury, G, PIT
2. Eric Staal, C, CAR
3. Nathan Horton, RW, FLA
4. Nikolai Zherdev, RW, CBJ
5. Thomas Vanek, LW, BUF
6. Milan Michalek, RW, SJ
7. Ryan Suter, D, NSH
8. Braydon Coburn, D, ATL (now w/ PHI)
9. Dion Phaneuf, D, CGY
10. Andrei Kostitsyn, LW, MTL

Other notable 1st-rounders:
11. Jeff Carter, C, PHI
13. Dustin Brown, RW, LA
14. Brent Seabrook, D, CHI
17. Zach Parise, C, NJ
19. Ryan Getzlaf, C, ANA

23. Ryan Kesler, C, VAN
24. Mike Richards, C, PHI
28. Corey Perry, RW, ANA

1st round busts (so far):
12. Hugh Jessiman, RW, NYR
26. Brian Boyle, C, LA
30. Shawn Belle, D, STL

Late round steals:
Round 5 – Nigel Dawes, LW, NYR
Round 7 – Joe Pavelski, C, SJ
Round 8 – Tobias Enstrom, D, ATL
Round 8 – Dustin Byfuglien, D, CHI
Round 9 – Jaroslav Halak, G, MON

Final thoughts:
This draft class has produced many of today’s young stars of the game. With players like Fleury, Staal, Horton, Vanek, Michalek, and Phaneuf selected in the top ten, you can look back at this class and say that it has helped the 'new NHL'.

- The (Mighty) Ducks were able to draft two of their core players in the first round (Getzlaf and Perry).
- Philly drafted 2 of its young studs in the top 25 (Richards and Carter).
- Parise turns out to be a steal at 17 for New Jersey, along with the Ducks’ duo, as he’s ready to become a perennial all-star in the league.
- The Rangers have to be a loser in the draft, as Hugh Jessiman has bounced around in the minors since the draft. Between the ECHL and AHL, Jessiman hasn’t been able to produce NHL-ready numbers.

Free Agent Spotlight: Brian Gionta

BRIAN GIONTA

Height: 5’7”
Weight: 175
Shoots: Right
Age: 30

2008/09 Salary: $4.0 million
Projected 09/10 Salary: $3.75-4.25 million

2008/09 Stats: 81 GP, 20 G, 40 A, +12
Playoff Stats: 7 GP, 2 G, 3 A

Possible Suitors:
1. Vancouver
2. Buffalo
3. Ottawa
4. Edmonton
5. Florida

Favorite: Vancouver
Dark horse destination: Florida

Brian Gionta hasn’t really been the same since his 89-point breakout in 05/06; but he has gotten better over the last 3 years, accumulating 45, 53, and 60 points (respectively) since. He had a decent postseason, but didn’t raise his stock any. The short winger may benefit from a change of scenery and a different system as a return to Jersey looks bleak at best. Two of the front-runners are the Canucks & Sabres. Some dark horses to watch would be Florida, Carolina, and maybe Nashville. As of now, I think he’d fit well in Buffalo.

Current Prediction:
Buffalo Sabres (4 yrs, $16 mil maybe a hair less)

June 21, 2003

Florida acquired Mikael Samuelsson and the 3rd overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft from Pittsburgh, in exchange for the 1st overall pick in the 2003 Entry Draft. Later that day the Pens used the pick to select goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
