Honestly the end had to come and what we decided to do for this "mock expose" was end it quickly with two different scenarios. One would be kind of good and the other would be very fast and very dire. Either way, we hope you enjoyed this and we look forward to more of these in the summer months.
The doom and gloom were like writing on the wall. With the officiating getting worse the masses screamed for the old refs back. When Bill Daly and company refused, the situation gradually got uglier and uglier. Thankfully, refs from the Olympics were able to come in and save the day sort of and restore order. However by then the damage had been done. The fanbase went down by some 20-30% in some markets as fans had just grown so tired of the officiating that they did not want to see their teams keep getting the shaft.
In the end, the NHL in 2011-12 had a cap of 50 million and there were tons of salary cutbacks everywhere. The product left in shambles and in need of a new leader, one that seemed years away from coming.
Simply the officiating was not all that bad. Fans were open to all the new changes and Ken Dryden would become commissioner. Under Dryden, the league took vast new steps to keep refs, players, and teams happy or at least better accustomed to some of the changes taking place. Gone were the uncertain days of Bettman and at last, the NHL had a hockey man who could take the league forward.
Yes there would be lots of work to be done but simply the old refs were gone and the new refs were able to perform even better than their predecessors. Officials were universally well above the 90% requirements because there was less stress on them. By 2012, the NHL was back on ESPN and several other cable and network outlets. It had seemed the NHL had finally turned the corner and agreed to a new CBA without another work stoppage. Finally, the NHL could start to get a foothold on its fan strength....something it once had in the mid 90's.
THE END????
